Some many years ago now I scored a series of Asian capital city visits by virtue of working for the Minister for Sport and needing to promote Sydney as the lead contender for the 2000 Olympic Games.

We mainly saw the inside of planes, taxis, hotels, offices and embassy dining rooms, but I did get to sneak in the odd little bit of shopping and one of the things I bought in Seoul which is dear to me still is a blue celadon tea cup with two people painted on one side.

I found myself recently with an Indanthrene blue pencil in my hand and a blank sheet of paper. While the original cup, sitting on a shelf in my study, is a much softer blue, the rich blue seemed to connect with my memory of that trip.

And when I was done with the couple they looked to be lonely, so I gave them a dog.
